Character Descriptions
Benjamin Barker aka Sweeney Todd Baritone with extraordinary acting skills. Barker has been imprisoned and removed from his wife and infant daughter by an evil Judge on a trumped up charge. He escapes back to London, many years later, only to find his wife is gone and daughter is the Judge's ward and fiance. He vows revenge on the Judge and his beadle. Stunningly driven and relatively humorless, Sweeney is a powerhouse role, almost Shakespearean in scope, the rage of Othello with the gothic stare of Edward Corey.
Mrs. Lovett A down on her luck shop owner who bakes "the worst pies in London," Lovett was the landlady of Barker and his wife Lucy, (had a bit of a crush on Ben at the time) and has kept Barker's barber tools for him all these years. She is a bit "dotty and addle-brained but sharp and business savvy when she needs to be. She becomes quite the successful businesswoman when she acquires new ingredients for her meat pies. Can be maternal (soft of), but really is quite amoral, yet fun and funn7 and lively in her manner. Second soprano, but mostly a virtuoso comic role with gothic tinges as well.
Anthony Young sailor who befriends Barker on his journey back from prison. Earnest, sweet and naive, yet persistent. Anthony spies Joanna (Todd's daughter) from her window and immediately falls in love and wants to rescue her. Tenor, needs a lovely romantic legit voice. Stock character hero, with again, gothic twist.
Joanna Sweeney's daughter who had been snatched from her mother at an early age. Very sweet, very naive, golden hair cascading down her back. Sings a sweet and powerful soprano. Vocal power required. Beautiful, sweet and determined as well.
The Beggar Woman Street person who roams the streets of London in her madness. Hates Mrs. Lovett, torments her, and torments everyone she meets, including Todd and Anthony, with a lovely soprano voice.
Judge Turpin Judge who wanted Baker's wife and stole her. Now has his eyes set on daughter Joanna to wed. Evil and malevolent, sado-masochistic, the judge is NOT a nice man, and yet he too sings nicely, baritone to bass.
The Beadle Police Officer who is the Judge's sidekick, was in on the original plot against the Barkers. Oily, supercilious, greedy and malevolent, a stock bad guy, sings high tenor.
Tobias A young man 12-13 or so who is left at the meat pie shop in the charge of Mrs. Lovett. Had been Pirelli's assistant, abused, yet spirited and loving. Develops a real affection for Mrs. Lovett and a healthy distrust of Sweeney Todd. Sings NOT WHILE I'M AROUND and others. Tenor
Pirelli Italian barber to "kings" who travels towns selling snake oil (hair resotrer) with young man Tobias. Sings tenor. Posing, preening, vain and completely overdone, Pirelli turns out to be other than he seems.
Mr. Fogg Head of Fogg's Asylum. Evil, crazy , and everything a horrible asylum keeper should be!
The ensemble is very active and is onstage quite a bit. They sing and tell the story with solo lines and ensemble songs and movement. The staging is in the fashion of Brecht and the ensemble acts as storytellers. They will be on stage a great deal!

Auditions will consist of singing: songs from the show are just fine and are encouraged. There will be a short dance audition followed by reading from the script, scenes to be posted soon
