Audition Notes

  • Rehearsals will begin in early May

  • Be prepared to sing a song from the show or another song that is very much like the music of RENT. No operas,no sedate show music

  • Be prepared to move a little and chat some

  • I’m truly looking for outstanding voices for everyone in the show!!!

  • Jonathan Larsen’s RENT is THE iconic musical of the 1990’s in the same way that HAIR was the iconic musical of the late 60’s and early 70’s. It is based on the opera LA BOHEME, but Larsen’s bohemians are the lost generation of the late 20th century, artists, creative folk, drug addicted in some cases and many living with AIDS. For them life has no guarantees. They need to love hard and fast - no day like today - to create a family of friends not their own family, to form a group to which they can belong and feel loved and supported. It is mostly about friendship and love and the tentative hold we all hold on life, love and friendship. It is a GREAT theatre piece and we are looking for people who love this show and music and want to take this journey with the cast and THE audience as well. I promise it will be a great ride!!

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!
**********Anyone under the age of 18 MUST bring a letter from their parents stating that they are aware of the content of the musical RENT….and give permission for their child to audition for the show********

Characters

The cast will consist of 20-25 members to include these main characters:
  • Mark - a documentary film maker who doesn't want to “sell out” but wants to keep his art pure. He is Roger’s roommate in Alphabet City in NYC, also former boyfriend of Maureen, who has left him for another - Joanne.
  • Roger - a musician trying to write at least one significant song, has the HIV virus from his former girlfriend who died, former drug user, angst ridden and a bit gun shy when it comes to love, meets and falls for Mimi, but not without complications.
  • Mimi - a dancer who works in clubs, HIV positive, drug addict, falls in love with Roger, but has a hard time kicking her drug habit, and being faithful it seems, very good at heart, sexy and likable.
  • Tom Collins - former professor who has given up academia, former roommate of Roger, Mark and Maureen. Comes back for Christmas Eve and is mugged and his coat stolen which makes him meet Angel, who is truly “his” angel
  • Angel - street drummer, cross dresser, with one of the most loving hearts in NYC. HIV positive, has a wonderfully positive attitude about life and love and his own health status. A beautiful human being inside and OUT. Falls for Tom Collins.
  • Maureen - a performance artist, sexy and alluring, bisexual, former lover of Mark, current lover of Joanne. Seemingly EVERYONE is attracted to her which creates a whole lot of drama in her life along with the drama she illuminates on stage.
  • Joanne - lawyer and activist, relatively level headed but very jealous of Maureen’s flirtations. She is funny, very loyal, but every bit as stubborn as Maureen.
  • Benny - former roommate of Mark, Roger, Maureen and Tom Collins. All these friends wanted to create a Utopia of creativity and artistry and friendship, but Benny has married a girl with money and now owns the building where they all used to live and wants the “riff-raff” gone. Seen as a turncoat by the friend, he sees himself as resourceful and very smart.
  • There is an ensemble of friends, street people, parents, drug dealers, thugs, homeless, police, waiters, support group people and back up singers for Maureen.
  • EVERYONE in this group sings solos and need to have top notch voices for this material and are an integral part of RENT!
